The Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) presents its XIV Report on Discrimination of the Roma Community for the year 2018. FSG has been producing this publication for 14 years, for the main purpose of uncovering and reporting the discrimination that the Roma community continues to suffer.

 

New research has shown that Black non-Irish people are five times more likely to experience discrimination when seeking employment in Ireland when compared to White Irish people. Black non-Irish people are over two and a half times more likely to experience discrimination when in employment compared to White Irish people.

 

Unia believes in a society where everyone has a place. To realize its vision, Unia has identified its 61 priorities for the federal, regional, community and European elections of May 2019. These recommendations should inspire candidates, academics and civil society.

 

A new Mental Health Charter for employers and service providers has been launched in Northern Ireland. The Charter, jointly produced by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland (ECNI), Action Mental Health, Disability Action, Mindwise, Mental Health Foundation and Niamh, provides a framework for working towards mentally healthy workplaces.

 

Cost and fears about how they will be treated, or consequences for their immigration status, are preventing people seeking or refused asylum from using health services, a new report from the Equality and Human Rights Commission has found, prompting a call for greater separation of the immigration and healthcare systems.

Their new research explores the experiences of people who are or have been in the asylum process in Britain, as well as engaging with healthcare professionals and analysing existing research.

 

The HateTrack Project is an experimental, exploratory research project that combines social, scientific and computational methods to understand online racist speech in the Irish context. The project used insights from civil society and experts in the field of race, racism and hate speech to build a computational tool that harvests and classifies Facebook and Twitter posts in terms of their probability to contain racially-loaded toxic contents.

 

The expert opinion prepared for the Federal Antidiscrimination Agency (FADA) sets out to identify the discrimination-relevant questions and categories included in representative repeat surveys conducted across Germany. It covers both cross-thematic surveys (such as microcensus, socio-economic panel - SOEP) and major area- and target group specific surveys (such as the German ageing survey "Deutscher Alterssurvey"). Based on these data, it evaluates existing Approaches and flags data gaps. Finally, the expert opinion formulates recommendations specifying the ways in which discrimination reporting should be developed further to match the scope of protection enshrined in the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG).

 

This is the first national survey of prejudice in Britain for over a decade. It measures prejudice and discrimination experienced by people with a wide range of protected characteristics.

The aim of this report is to demonstrate the value of using a national survey of this type to measure people’s experiences of prejudice in Britain, as well as people’s attitudes towards others. It also aims to set a benchmark for future surveys.

 

The nineteenth Annual Report of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, covering the period 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018, was laid before the Northern Ireland Assembly and the House of Commons on 5 September 2018.

The Commission has also published a review summarising the report, which describes the range and impact of the Commission’s work twenty years after the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement made the focus on equality one of its central tenets.

 

The State must be held to account on its approach to the rights of persons with disabilities, the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (“The Commission”) stated on 1 October.

The Commission made the call as it launches a nation-wide campaign for people with disabilities to serve on the first ever statutory advisory committee in Ireland to support monitoring of Ireland’s implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
