Equinet

13 November 2017 - Brussels, Strasbourg, Vienna, Warsaw - On the 10th anniversary of the landmark judgment of the European Court of Human Rights on the segregation of Roma children in education, equality and human rights organizations call for a redoubling of efforts to bring children together in the spirit of Europe’s commitment to dignity, equality and human rights.

In the report Harassment on the basis of Gender and Sexual Harassment (2014), national equality bodies flag the need to build a culture of rights to ensure that the rights we have on paper according to EU and national law become a reality on the ground.

On 17th and 18th October 2017, the UN Office for Human Rights (OHCHR), the International Disability Alliance (IDA), the European Disability Forum (EDF) and Equinet co-organised a technical workshop on engaging with the UNCRPD Committee.

The Equinet network, and in particular its work on standards for equality bodies, was presented to Member State representatives this week, at the European Commission’s High Level Group on Non-discrimination, Equality and Diversity.

Why do stories matter? What is framing? And how can we create the right messages to talk to a given audience?

’Framing Equality: Communication Handbook for Equality Bodies’ explains the importance of framing - how the stories told interact with our thinking - and explains how to craft our communication to create sustainable social change.

It incorporates research insights, examples and interactive activities to offer a practical and creative guide for your communication.

The General Assembly of Equinet Members met in Brussels on 11 October for the 2017 Annual General Meeting (AGM). The Equinet AGM saw the election of a new Executive Board, a change in the Equinet Statutes, as well as the adoption of the Workplan for 2018.

“Equinet, European Network of Equality Bodies, provides a key platform for peer support among equality bodies and for identifying and communicating the policy lessons from our work. Equinet has achieved much in its first 10 years and can point to a valued contribution to advancing equality in Europe. It is well placed to continue this contribution at a time when our ambitions for equality are being sorely tested across Europe.” – Evelyn Collins, Chair of Equinet Executive Board

The series of Equinet’s ’In Focus Briefs’ are short thematic papers, which will highlight the work of Equinet and its members, as well as EU developments on a given topic.

The first one gives an overview of the work of the Equinet Network over the past 10 years.
